Warhammer Fantasy 8th Tournament 'The Karl Franz Cup'

On Saturday the 15th of April 2023 I went to Hachioji to attend a Warhammer fantasy 8th edition tournament called 'The Karl Franz Cup'. This was my first Warhammer fantasy tournament since I came to Japan years ago. the size was 1500 points and there were about 16 players. I was really looking forward to it as I used to play a lot of fantasy tournaments in the past.

There was a good mix of armies, with no more than 2 of any one kind and an almost 50/50 mix of English and Japanese speakers.

I took Orcs and Goblins. My list was fairly soft, with none of the traditional strong combinations and a giant. Here it is.

Game 1 Kentaro (Vampire Counts)

Vampire lord

2x necromancer

40 skeletons

20 zombies

2x5 dire wolves

5 hex wraiths

3crypt horrors

3 vargheist

Game 1 was against a scary vampire counts army, with a powerful vampire lord and 5 hex wraiths which I had no answer to, but the scenario was watch tower, which helped me as the giant unit of skeletons was too big to get in.

I lost the tower, so won the first turn, the zombies went in the tower and we were off.

The wolf riders who didn't vanguard on the left charged the unit of dire wolves facing them, while the rest of the army moved up in the centre. Shooting killed a few skeletons,The wolf riders on the left lost 2 of their number for 2 dire wolves which meant that only 1 crumbled and the combat went on.

The dire wolves on their first course.

In the vampires turn the army all moved up and shifted to the right side of the board, leaving nothing except the wolf combat left of the tower. A unit of zombies appeared in front of my army. The dire wolves on the right had tried to charge my wolves but were hit by the fanatic and wiped out. The other wolf riders failed to hurt the dire wolves, lost another 2 and the last one fled and was wiped out by the 2 chasing dire wolves.

Turn 2

The wolf riders on the right failed animosity and somewhat foolishly charged the vargheist. The night goblins also failed and went into the zombies. Fortunately I had taken the characters out of the unit in turn 1. The rest of the army moved to the right to face the vampires, with the exception of the black orcs who were waiting for the vampire to stop facing the tower before they went in to clear our the zombies. The goblin wolf boss charged the 2 dire wolves that had wiped out the wolf riders on the left.

Magic and shooting achieved little. The wolf riders were predictably shredded by the vargheist. The wolf boss, embarrassingly managed to miss with everything and then took a wound meaning combat was a draw. The night goblins killed a hand full of zombies, lost a couple of their number and crumbled some more zombies, leaving less than half the starting number of zombies.

In the vampires turn the crypt horrors who were leading the conga line of units round the right side of the tower charged the savage orcs, with the black knights and skeletons moving up behind, using the tower to shield their flank. The vargheist and hex wraiths moved up to on the far right to threaten my war machines. The magic phase saw a danse macarb handing out re-rolls and the skeleton unit was also regenerated back to 40. My wolf boss killed 1 dire wolf, but was dragged down by the last one. The 40pts of dire wolves had killed over 99 points of wolf riders now, clearly showing who were the better wolves. The crypt horrors shocked everyone by smashing only 2 savage orcs and then getting wiped out by the return attacks of the warboss and boyz. The zombies fighting the night goblins were also finished off

Turn 3

The night goblin bows on the left, who had done nothing until now shot down the last heroic dire wolf. The savage orcs went into the black knights, who had been shielded by the crypt horrors. The goblin shaman also managed to get itchy Itchy Nuisance off on the vampire and skeletons, and then also rolled a 6 to reduce the vampires initiative down to orc levels. Everyone else stayed where they were. In combat the savage orcs wiped out the black knights and overran to 1 inch away from the vampire's unit.

In the vampire's turn, the lack of re rolls, and the knowledge that both necromancer would probably die meant that the vampire's unit had a moment of doubt and did not charge, but instead moved both necromancers out of the unit. The hex wraiths chopped up some night goblins, another unit of zombies appeared behind me and the vargheist started going down the line of war machines.

Turn 4

The warboss saw his chance and charged out of the savage orcs and caught one of the necromancers who had left himself open The necromancer did not stand a change and the warboss was left safely away from the vampire.. The black orcs went into the tower and cleared out the zombies. The vargheist continued the warmachine hunt.

The vampire and her unit now hit the savage orcs while the hex wraiths continued to work on the night goblins, who had now lost over half their number. The vampire disappointed by only killing 3 savage orcs with quick blood and red fury. Another went down to the skeletons but enough skeletons were killed so the orcs were only testing on an 8 and they held.

The black orcs in their first tower of the day.

And then Kentaro rolled a 6 and the game ended. He had killed 512 points from my army and I had got around 470 from his, but I also got the 1000 points for the tower.

Kentaro was unlucky that the game ended so soon, as I would have had to keep feeing his vampire units to stop her from being able to get into the tower and I had little that could hurt his remaining units. I was happy that my plan to take and hold the tower had worked. The giant has done nothing all game. I was now in 5th place due to my low scoring win.

Later in the day I got a photo of what happens when Kentaro gets to open his zombie bag.

Scary Stuff!!
