Karl Franz Cup 2 Game 2 Warhammer Fantasy 8th Edition Battle report

The second game was against Nagai who also had dark elves. This time the list was more traditional with 3 big units of spear men, black guard and 10 cold ones led by a item heavy lord and also a sorceress on dark steed. I was on the same table as last time.

Turn 1

We were playing the watch tower, I got the tower but declined to put any units in it, we deployed and Nagai went first. He moved his units up but was out of range for magic and the little shooting did nothing.

In my turn I moved up 1 unit of silver helms to block the spear men, and put the dragon in between them and the tower. The rest of the army moved up, except the white lions which kept the barricades in between them and the cold ones. The dragon mage then buffed himself with flaming sword and Nagai saved his dice to stop fireball and the bound spell. The dragons breath weapon then killed 14 out of the 20 black guard after some poor saves from Nagai, he failed all 14.

Turn 2

The spear men charged the silver helms, the sorceress left her dark riders and the cold ones ignored the white lions and went round the tower and the 6 black guard went into the tower. Magic again did nothing, as did shooting. The spear men won combat by a bit, but the silver helms held.

In my turn my lord tried to charge over the combat, but the dark riders fled leaving him on the wrong side with the cold ones eyeing his flank. The dark riders would fail to rally and leave the table next turn. The phoenix bombed the sorceress, but only removed her 1 time ward save. The other unit of silver hems charged the flank of the spear men, but the held. A fire ball from the dragon mage reduced the black guard in the tower to just the champion.

Turn 3

The cold ones charged my lord, who fled, they then went into the back of the first unit of silver helms. For some reason the sorceress fled (I cant remember why) she would rally on the 5 turn.  The cold one knights and lord butchered the silver helms and the other unit was run down by the spear men who ended up a couple of inches from my fleeing lord.

The lord rallied and the dragon mage fireballed some knights. The white lions took the tower from the last black guard.

I forgot to show the sorceress fleeing and showed her doom bolt too early.

Turn 4

The spear men charged the lord and the cold ones went into the tower. The dark elf lord cleaned out the white lions and the spear men killed the griffon before it could attack. The high elf lord once again fled and escaped.

In my turn the lord again rallied and some dark elf spear men were killed by arrows and fireballs.

Turn 5

The cold ones failed the stupidity test and stood facing the tower. The spear men charged the lord and won combat, but the lord held. There were now only a few spear men left. The sorceress rallied and miscast a boosted doom bolt on the phoenix, getting 19 hits and 8 wounds. Thanks to its 4+ ward save the turn it survived with1 left. Then we remembered the dark elf magic trait and another 8 s1 hits did 2 wounds. The phoenix then made both 4+ saves. She took a wound from the miscast   The lord took a wound but reduced the spear men to 4. He lost but did not flee. The phoenix bombed the sorceress of the table.

Turn 6

The cold ones and lord stayed by the tower to contest it. In my turn the phoenix charged the spear men's rear and a single spear men  turned and promptly killed it. The high elf lord finally killed the spear men and was left on 1 wound, the archers and dragon mage reduced the cold ones to 1 model and the dragon mage moved to contest the tower.

The result was a 900 to 700 point difference in my favor with a draw for the tower. The game had looked all but over after turn 2, but had got closer after that. The griffon had been a disappointment with the dragon and phoenix doing well. It was a fun game, and a loss for my partner left our team in 3rd position, very close to the 4th team. Next would be the big doubles match.
