Carl Franz Cup 3 Warhammer Fantasy Tournament part 3
Game 3
I now faced Rodin in the final round, The same chap I had faced in the previous 2 tournaments in the final round and had beaten both times.
He had his High Elves again. His army was like a much more muscly version of mine. He had a death mage lord with the book of Hoeth and a BSB on horses in a big unit of 14 silver helms. 1 Prince on a Moondragon, 2 Frostheart phoenixes and 2x5 Ellyrian reavers. Almost nothing I had could fight these big monsters and they completely outclassed my monsters.
We were playing battle for the pass. Rodin took the first turn. He moved his army up, keeping the frost heart phoenixes out of charge range as it is possible that a lucky charge from my horsemen could break them through combat resolution. His dragon moved up on the left in a position to counter charge any unit that went into his big silverhelm block who had also moved up. His magic could only reduce the strength and toughness of my noble on gryphon. His reavers did a wound as they rode around my phoenixes.
In my turn my noble and 1 unit of silver helms managed 2 middling charges into his silver helm block. The rest of my army shuffled back to avoid the charges of his monsters while the flame phoenixes bombed off a unit of reavers. My magic did nothing, and the archers did a wound to a frost phoenix. In combat however the mage could not escape my noble as the silverhem champion could stop him being challenged out. So the mage bit the bullet and challenged my noble himself. Thanks to his ward save and my de-buff from the spell he only took 2 wounds and survived. I took no losses and did none to the block. I lost by 1 and the silverhelms ran, but my noble stayed.
In Rodin's turn 2 the dragon charged the fleeing silver helms and ran them down, and my archers fled from a frost phoenix charge which panicked my dragon mage who also fled and panicked my mage lord, who luckily did not flee and remained on the table. The back edge of my side was now full of units with no wear to run. The other frost phoenix moved up. The mage could do nothing in combat and was over killed by the gryphon and noble who continued the fight. I now had complete magical control of the game.
In my turn my fleeing units rallied. My mage lord hid behind a hill in the back corner. And the others moved around. The phoenixes removed the last of the reavers. In the magic phase I miscast a purple sun which hit both prince on dragon and a frost phoenix. Both monsters passed their int 3 tests, but the prince rolled a 6 and fell into the sun. I had killed both lords in 1 turn. My mage lost his 1 time ward save to the miscast. In combat my noble challenged his BSB and my noble died and his gryphon was run down.
Now was Rodion's turn 3 and he had lost both his lords. The frost phoenix charged my archers and the riderless dragon went into 1 of my dragon mage. My mage was hidden by the hill so the silverhelm tried to angle to block his escape. In combat my dragon mage and archers were wiped out.
In my turn 3 I moved around getting away from Rodion onto the right flank. I killed the BSB with death spells, but wounded both of my mages thanks to a miscast.
In his turn 4 Rodion
moved his stuff around to block my flank charges. There was little
else he could do.
In my Turn 4 I charged the big block of
silverhelms with a phoenix gambling on terror. They failed the ld 8
test and fled from the board giving me around 350 points. The phoenix
stopped in the middle of the board facing no less than 3 enemy
monsters, all bigger than him. A purple sun went through both
Frostheart Phoenixes, but again they both passed their int 3 tests.
The miscast result wounded my mage lord and his dragon.
In Rodion's turn 5 my
phoenix was thoroughly thrashed by the many bigger monsters. There
was nothing else he could do.
In m turn 5 my mage went for a
spell to try and kill a phoenix who had 2 wounds left, but the
miscast did nothing and the feed back killed both my mages. The game
ended there as he could not catch me and I could not hurt Rodin's
monsters.
I had 1 unit of silver helms, and 1 sun dragon and 1 phoenix. Rodin had 2 frost Phoenixes and his moon dragon. The score was 1715-1420 in Rodin's favour, so he got the bonus 1000 points for winning. This catapulted him to first place, over another player, Wil, who had won all of his games and was most displeased.
I had lost all my games, but still managed to hold on to 4th place. I also came 3rd in painting and 1st in sports leaving me with overall 2nd position.
I had a really great time. The players were wonderful and the games were awesome. My joke army did quite well, even against some harder opponents. I thought the naked noble and gryphon would be the biggest liability, but they (the gryphon) killed a deamon prince, bretonnian paladin and a high elf mage lord. In fact, it was the dragons which did nothing as they could not stomp most opponents during the day and the mages would die so easily they did not ever see combat.
The next event may be Old World, so we will see how it plays.
