Karl Franz Cup 3 Warhammer Fantasy Tournament part 2

Game 2

In my next game I faced RG, who had come first in the previous tournament. His was fielding Bretonnians with 2 blocks of knights, 1 realm and 1 errant, 1 small group of grail knights and a 3 Pegasus knights some archers and a trebuchet. He had a lord and 4 paladins, 1 on a Pegasus and a prophetess wizard lord. The mission was meeting engagement.

RG deployed his army first mostly slightly back into his corner with the Pegasus knights and grail knights not arriving and the archers going in a house. I also deployed carefully, forgetting that he would probably pray. My dragon mage and silver helms did not arrive.

Turn 1, I went first and moved up slightly, with most of my power on my left flank. I don't think magic did much this round, though I was able to get flaming sword on my archers. In the shooting phase, despite only 15 being in range due to my bad deployment the archers did 4 wounds to the trebuchet and killed it. Already one of the biggest dangers to me was gone, it was all looking great.

In the Bretonnian turn the moved up a bit, but were careful to try and avoid charges. The Pegasus paladin avoided charging my various units and flew over everyone to use his flame template lance to kill about 7 archers. In the magic phase RG cast a comet of cassandora in the middle of the battle field. The archers in the house did a wound to a phoenix.

In my turn 2 the silver helms on the right manoeuvred as did the death mage. The left silver helms charged the peasant archers in the house, killed 5 and broke the rest. They then waited patiently for the grain knights to flank charge them. My noble got up behind the Pegasus paladin and the phoenixes firebombed the realm knights killing about 5. In the magic phase I killed the paladin in the knights errant with a spell

In the Bretonnian turn 2 the flying Paladin charged the archers and the grail knights charged my silver helms near the house who fled and escaped into the middle of the board. The rest of his army manoeuvred, with the knights errant leaving me with a long charge to them. In the magic phase the mage cast a thunderbolt and did 2 or 3 wounds to a phoenix. The comet also came down and obliterated the silver helms who had just fled and the remaining peasants who had fled from the house. The flying paladin killed a couple of archers, but took a wound, nobody broke.

Now came a key turn for the High elves. The right flank silver helms made a long charge into the 7 or 8 remaining knights errant while the mages and phoenixes manoeuvred, killing a few more of the knights of the realm. My noble on his griffon also charged the paladin on his Pegasus, who was still fighting the archers, in the rear. In the magic phase I reduced the prophetess to one wound. The silver helms killed 1 or 2 of the errant in combat and broke them, but failed to catch them. My general noble did nothing to the Pegasus paladin and was killed in return, but thanks to the read charge bonus and archers banner the paladin lost by 2 or 3 points and fled, the Griffon running him down. It had now avenged its master in 2 of 2 games.

The Bretonnians had little the could do as I was out of almost all charge arcs. The grail knights moved up on the left and the Pegasus knights flew over my silver helms to threaten the archers. In the magic phase the mage cast another comet and killed the wounded phoenix with a spell.

In my turn 4 I moved around more the phoenix killing the rest of the realm knights and wounded the general. My silver helms had died, but I cant remember the cause, maybe it was a chain lighting from the mage. My mage killed the prophetess with a spell and I charged the griffon into the 5 grail knights. The archers shot the approaching Pegasus knights but did nothing. My griffon killed a knight, but took 2 wounds. It still held however.

In the Bretonnian turn 4 the peg knights charged my archers and killed them over a couple of combats. The grail knights also killed the griffon. The remaining heroes joined the 3 or 4 errant knights that were left.

In my turn 5 I manoeuvred again and killed the BSB with magic. The phoenix bombed off a couple more errant. I was very confident of victory as the Bretonians could now not hurt me at all.

In turn 6 I bombed again but left 2 errant knights. All the characters were on 1 wound. I rolled a double 1 for the magic phase, failed to cast and the game ended.

After counting points several times it turned out I had lost by around 40 or 50. I had both dragon mages left as well as a phoenix which was just over 1000 points. RG had 1 wound on 3 characters including the general, the points for the big errant block as well as the peg knights and grail knights. Which was around the same, but I had only score 1 banner whereas he had scored 125 for 1 banner and my general. If I had not thrown away my griffon on a joke charge I would have won. But it was still a very fun game which had got very crazy. The final scores were 1250 to RG and 1201 to me.

I had now lost both first games and missed out on the bonus 1000 points for winning both times. However I was scoring well and still held on to the upper half in 4th place.
