A letter from Kagram Branbar
“A letter from Kagram Branbar” An extract from Markus Diano's great work “The History of the Western Dwarf Realms”
From the following letter, we can see how the conflicts of 2432 began the process of altering the perceptions of the mountain holds at the edge of the Vaults. The attacks of marauding greenskin tribes and the increasing power of the ratmen at the expense of the citizens of Northern Tilea drove the dwarfs to adopt a more proactive and outward looking perspective, which was unusual at the time. The original translation was provided to me from the professor of Khazalid at Wissenburg University, Markus Libenhimer. The letter itself is an account of a battle in the winter of 2432 and was written by a scribe named Kagram Branbar to the King of Kazad Frujund at the time, Dalbak Galgrong.
The throng encountered the foul thaggoraki (translator's note, the word “ratmen” fails to conjuror the deep disgust this word represents.) while marching overland to the north of Ravola. While our forces were still in marching formation, lord Wyrtromm swiftly formed the line and surprised the enemy. Lord Wyrtromm, along with runesmith Rolokri and Thane Gohlhirn, lead our warriors in the centre where they crushed the main body of thaggoraki.
Your grandson, thane Snorri Galgrong and the long beards he was with, became separated from the main army during the battle after they entered a small forest. After the battle I leaned that they had encountered no less than 8 monstrous rat ogres but had driven them off with skill and hard fighting.
On the right of our army, the slayer band all met their ends against some colossal rat monster. The monster survived the battle and we have no knowledge of its current location.
Our losses are moderate amongst the clansmen, but heavy amongst the slayers and rangers. Our war machines were also destroyed by the terrible magics of the enemy's bell. Many of our losses were caused by the magic wielding rat atop the bell, but it appears that during the battle, it was the victim of its own magics. The enemy were almost totally destroyed at the end of the day, only the enemies foul bell and some long gun armed rats escaped, as well as the monstrous abomination. We have claimed victory and dealt the enemy a blow, but with the loss of our weapon train and ranger guides we shall begin the journey home.
Your ever loyal servant .
Kagram Branbar
Game Report
The dwarven war machines destroyed the skaven artillery and damaged the infantry, but were wiped out by the bell, The skaven wizard reduced the slayers, who just lost to the abomination, as well as wiping out the rangers and weakening the warriors before perishing after 4 miscasts and 1 wound from a warpstone token.. The warriors and heroes eventually crushed all the skaven infantry.
The only close part was the battle of rat ogres against the dwarf BSB and long beards. The dwarves should have lost, but some poor rolling saw both units of rat ogres broken one after another.
In the end the dwarves lost about 1200 points to the skaven losses of around 2000. The game size was 2500.
